Banking Technology Connections: August 28, 2012

August 28, 2012

Welcome to Banking Technology Connections. The goal of the newsletter is to communicate recent trends and issues facing Banking Technology Professionals. If you would like to subscribe to this newsletter and receive it via email please contact Sam Sexer at ssexer@wolfandco.com.

How well do you educate your Board on Information Security? In this week's selection of articles, we see a compelling interview on board presentation best practices (How to Talk Security to the Board of Directors. CSO's Advice: 'Come to the Board with Full Story'). IT and security professionals are constantly challenged with reporting very technical issues or requests to a group of folks who have little to no experience in the technology world.

Unfortunately, not only are the regulators assessing how the information is presented, but your career depends on it.  In order to elevate yourself, you need to learn how to speak the "business of banking".  This means presenting a full story of what you want to achieve.  If you are struggling with getting results, take a new approach.  Every time you present a report or make a request, start with the assumption that your audience has no idea what you are talking about.  Make them feel comfortable that you are sensitive about their time and are helping them make the best decision for the institution.  How?  Convert the technical jargon into business language.  Use PowerPoint, and don't try to scare them into buying into your recommendations.  Anyone can just present the details, it takes a leader to present it in a way that gets everyone on board with the idea.  Be that leader!
