DEF CON is at once fascinating and frightening. It’s attended by nearly 14,000 people interested in learning about the latest hacker techniques and what’s happening in IT security. Started in 1992, this annual event is now one of the largest hacker conventions in the world. Each summer, DEF CON presenters feed attendees with information on topics such as the latest network and data attack vectors, all while making it quite clear that no matter how hard we work to make our IT systems secure, hackers will find ways to crack into them.

In addition to the various tracks and informative sessions, one of our favorite aspects of the event is the “villages”. These are setup throughout the convention and include the Social Engineering Village, Hardware Hacking Village and the Internet of Things Village, to name a few. The villages have specific areas of focus and are open throughout the day for any attendees who want to stop in and see live demonstrations of things such as a social engineering attack, or to learn how to bypass security mechanisms on a USB or hard drive.

By learning from the minds at DEF CON, we can gain a better picture of how to stay ahead of the ever-evolving security threats and better protect our employees and clients. This year, DEF CON 24 is taking place August 4-7th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Members of our IT Assurance team are looking forward to attending, and we hope to see you there!
